Alabama, Gonzaga, and Washington vying for USC transfer Desmond Claude

There is a compelling case to be made that Desmond Claude is the best available player in the transfer portal who is not participating in the NBA Draft process.

He averaged 15.8 points and 4.2 assists per game at USC this season and is a proven high-major performer.

Claude’s recruiting modified once he entered the transfer site near the deadline. He was once considered a near lock for the Florida Gators, but they have apparently moved on and signed Boogie Fland. A visit to Alabama was scheduled a week ago, but it has been postponed.

Claude is still considering the Crimson Tide, as well as a few of programs from Washington. Here’s a closer look at how he would fit into the three reported scenarios.

Alabama Crimson Tide

This offseason, the Tide lost All-American guard Mark Sears and freshman guard Labaron Philon, leaving Aden Holloway and Miami transfer Jalil Bethea as the anticipated primary guards, along with two returning players (Latrell Wrightsell and Houston Mallette). Coach Nate Oats has traditionally had one of the finest offenses in NCAA basketball, but there are some questions about this squad. Adding Claude would give them an all-league guard in the SEC, and the transfer may thrive in this type of high-paced attack.

Gonzaga Bulldogs

Gonzaga will have a whole new backcourt this season after losing veterans Nolan Hickman and Ryan Nembhard. However, this bunch lacks the same scoring ability, with ASU transfer Adam Miller being the greatest scorer on paper, with a career 10 ppg average. Claude would immediately become the top guard on the squad and a focal point, while playing for one of the most likely NCAA Tournament teams in college basketball. He can also put up impressive statistics in WCC play.

Washington Huskies

The Huskies are an appealing option for a variety of reasons. They’ve signed some notable mid-major players, such Quimari Peterson (East Tennessee State) and Jacob Ognacevic (Lipscomb), and Claude could reconnect with former Trojan Wesley Yates. They would also be willing to give Claude more on-ball time after allowing forward Great Osobor to play point-forward last season. Of course, Washington does not compare to Gonzaga or Alabama in terms of winning, so Claude’s decision to go with the Huskies over them must be based on role and money.
