Cyriel Dessers: 13 times Super League champions prepared to pay big on Rangers and Nigerian goal king

According to Soccernet.ng, Greek club AEK Athens is preparing a major proposal for Rangers attacker Cyriel Dessers, as interest in the Nigeria international grows ahead of the summer transfer season.

Dessers, who signed for Rangers from Cremonese in 2023 for £4.5 million, scored 29 goals in 55 appearances in all competitions this season.

He finished the Scottish Premiership season as the league’s top scorer, amid criticism for his inconsistent performance in front of goal.

According to the Daily Record, AEK Athens, the 13-time Greek Super League champions, are open to making the 30-year-old a marquee signing under new owner Marios Iliopoulos. The club is said to be willing to give a sum in the region of £5 million, which would net Rangers a little profit on the forward’s departure.

Dessers’ possible departure comes as Rangers seek to rebuild their team under new manager Russell Martin. With Hamza Igamane emerging as the club’s first-choice striker, Dessers’ departure may free up transfer cash and pay space as the Gers prepare for a renewed domestic and European assault.

While other clubs, including Serie A side Cagliari, have expressed interest in the Nigerian forward, Rangers are considering selling him while his market worth is still high.

Dessers is also regaining popularity on the international stage. He was considered Nigeria’s best player at the Unity Cup in London, scoring against Ghana and assisting against Jamaica. His efforts appear to have impressed Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who now considers Dessers the primary backup to star striker Victor Osimhen.

Despite having yet to make a competitive appearance for Nigeria, Dessers‘ current form and Chelle’s adoration may lead to his inclusion in the next round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September.
