Alex Neil addresses free agency speculation in the aftermath of Stoke City’s injury deluge for the Leicester City match.

Stoke City are not ruling out signing a free agent as they deal with an onslaught of injuries.

Alex Neil could be without ten players, including five defenders, when his team travels to Leicester this weekend, according to his pre-match press conference. Ben Wilmot and Ki-Jana Hoever were among those who limped out of Stoke’s midweek match against Southampton, joining Lynden Gooch, Michael Rose, and Enda Stevens in the treatment room.

Gooch and Rose have been nursing minor hamstring and groyne injuries, respectively, and it remains to be seen if this encounter is too soon for them, while left-back Stevens has been out since suffering a calf injury when playing for the Republic of Ireland during the last international break.

Under-21s defenders Luke Badley-Morgan and Ian Kamga are both sidelined with injuries, as are centre-back prospects Matty Baker and David Okagbue, who are on loan at Newport County and Walsall, respectively, and cannot be recalled outside of transfer windows.

The front line is without Andre Vidigal (ankle), Ryan Mmaee (hamstring), and Tyrese Campbell (hamstring), while Emre Tezgel (quad) is working on his conditioning with the under-18s. Lewis Baker, a midfielder, is still recovering from preseason knee surgery.

Stoke have been looking into adding free players to their roster since deadline day, and talks are still ongoing.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about anyway,” Neil explained. It’s not something that’s been taken off the table; we’ve been talking about it for weeks. We’ll go over it again.”
