Amazingly – Leeds’ starter was given to Man City in a desperate attempt to keep the trade from falling through.

According to reports, Manchester City has been offered the services of Illan Meslier from Leeds United as a prospective replacement for Stefan Ortega.

Bayern Munich has recently made Ortega a top target in their search for a replacement for the ailing Manuel Neuer. Man City, on the other hand, only signed him last summer and has been hesitant to do business.

However, according to Sky Sports Germany expert Florian Plettenberg, they have been offered Meslier as a replacement in order to expedite the deal.

Meslier was a member of Leeds‘ Premier League relegation team last season, which has since been badly weakened by departures – and he, too, could be looking for a new club in the top level.

And Plettenberg has stated that Man City have ruled out bringing in a new No.2 in any case. Although Ortega is open to a move to Bayern Munich, his current club is not.

As a result, Bayern‘s plans to loan Ortega have fallen through. Plettenberg claims that they have opted to continue with Sven Ulreich until Neuer returns, and that they have informed Ortega’s team that they are leaving.

It means that Man City has managed to keep Ortega, whereas Meslier will have to go elsewhere or commit to Leeds for the upcoming Championship season.

The Frenchman is still under contract at Elland Road for another three years, so despite losing his spot near the conclusion of Leeds‘ most recent Premier League stint, he is set to add to his 128 appearances for the club.

Ortega, 30, has two years left on his contract with Manchester City, where he made 15 appearances in his rookie season. Ortega only allowed nine goals while keeping clean sheets in little over half of his appearances.

He is unlikely to unseat Ederson as No. 1, but with Bayern dropping their chase, he will have greater assurance about where he will compete for gametime.
