Leeds: McGilligan issues harsh statement following Birmingham defeat

Leeds had only one point from their first two Championship games.

Conor McGilligan, a journalist, has criticised Leeds United following their performance against Birmingham City, claiming that there is nothing positive going on at Elland Road this season.

What is the most recent news on Leeds United?
After being relegated from the Premier League last season following a year of dismal performances, Leeds fans were hopeful that their team would at least return to winning ways in the Championship.

That has not been the case thus far, with the Whites picking up only one point from two Championship matches.

A 2-2 draw with Cardiff City that required a late equalise was followed by a 1-0 loss to Birmingham that featured yet another late strike, this time against Leeds.

In the interim, there was a 2-1 triumph over League One Shrewsbury in the Carabao Cup first round, the sole competitive victory of the Daniel Farke reign so far.

Combine this with the club’s best players on loan leaving owing to relegation clauses in their contracts, plus a failure to bring in a lot of talent at Elland Road, and things look very dismal in Yorkshire.

To put it bluntly, the club is in a crisis, one that McGilligan does not believe will be resolved very soon.

“We’ve had a truly horrific performance against Birmingham City which shows no credentials for promotion whatsoever, and this isn’t being dramatic, I said this yesterday, we’re looking down rather than up, 100%, and the reason I say that is because the squad is so weak, so weak,” he said after the defeat.

“I really don’t know what else to say,” he added. I’m practically to the point of giving up, and the season hasn’t even begun. There is absolutely no hope. You’ll notice that the cheerful clappers and super supporters have all gone silent since these are the facts.”

McGilligan feels Leeds would be “lucky to finish 15th” if things continue as they are, even implying that Farke, who only arrived in early July, would be “thinking about moving on pretty quickly” if his four-year contract had been shorter.

Leeds‘ chances of a quick return to the Premier League appear to be in jeopardy, with problems both on and off the pitch jeopardising the club’s promotion quest.

In comparison, the other relegated clubs from last season, Leicester City and Southampton, have made far stronger starts, picking up six and four points from their first two games, respectively.

While there is still time to change the narrative in the transfer market, Farke has a monumental task ahead of him to steady the ship.

Who have Leeds signed?
Leeds have only signed four players this summer, which is alarming given that 10 have already left and more are expected to follow.

Leeds‘ first signing of the window was Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea, who was followed by cost-effective deals for Karl Darlow from Newcastle and Sam Byram as a free agent.

Farke has added some top-flight experience to his squad in the form of Joe Rodon. The Spurs defender has signed on loan after spending last season with Rennes in Ligue 1.

In recent weeks, the Whites have been linked with both forwards Tom Cannon and Joel Piroe, as well as Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips.
