Leeds United are likely to miss out getting Michail Antonio following the West Ham transfer news.
According to West Ham Football, Leeds United transfer target Michail Antonio has been told he would not be permitted to leave West Ham this summer due to the club’s failure to identify a suitable replacement.
On 22 August, the editor of 6foot2 posted the news on his Twitter account, adding that the club’s difficulty in finding a successor for Gianluca Scamacca means they are unlikely to find two new players.
Leeds was linked with Antonio as recently as 7 August, when Football Transfers reported that the Yorkshire club was competing with Celtic for the Jamaican striker.
Leeds’ striker woes persist.
West Ham aren’t the only club struggling to replace their strikers this summer. Patrick Bamford suffered an injury against Hearts in pre-season, forcing Leeds to look for a replacement quickly, and the club is still looking three weeks later.
With Willy Gnonto on strike, Georginio Rutter is Leeds‘ sole option up front aside from youngster Joe Gelhardt, and the club is in desperate need of another striker to improve their attacking threat.
With Antonio off the table, the team will have to explore elsewhere for new players. Swansea striker Joel Piroe had been mentioned earlier in the transfer season, but rumours claim Leeds were scared off by a hefty asking price.
Leeds are also interested in Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer, but they are put off by a big price tag – this one is estimated to be about £20 million.
This is one to keep an eye on.
