Leeds United has made contact with Tottenham in regard to the transfer of Djed Spence.

According to Paul O Keefe, Leeds United have approached Tottenham about a trade for Djed Spence before the transfer window closes.

On Friday, August 25, an agent with strong Spurs ties tweeted that the Whites are “willing to consider all options” for a deal, while Spence, 23, is also looking at options “including abroad.”

Since joining North London from Nottingham Forest last summer, the England under-21 international has only made six brief outings. He spent the second half of the season in Ligue 1 with Rennes, appearing 10 times.

Despite bringing in Sam Byram on a free transfer, Daniel Farke has been looking to strengthen further at right back this summer and got as far as the start of a medical at Thorp Arch with former Norwich favourite Max Aarons before the deal was hijacked by Bournemouth.

The manager has already loaned out fellow Spurs defender Joe Rodon.

Opportunity
The end of the transfer window is suddenly threatening to make up for a lot of the suffering that came before it, and giving Spence with a route back from the wilderness would fit right in.

After the big-money acquisition of Joel Piroe, the new 49ers regime has finally demonstrated some substantial purpose, as promised, and with Willy Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra both potentially back in the fold from now on, the assault has been significantly enhanced.

It appeared that scooping up forgotten Premier League players on loan would be the only way Farke could bolster his squad in the final week of the window, but serious money has now been spent.

With prospective deals for Nadiem Amiri and Joseph Paintsil presently in the works, it appears that there will be more investment in the future, with the long-rumored Glen Kamara deal having yet to be finalised.

Spence, like Piroe, is a proven Championship performer, having been a standout in Steve Cooper‘s promotion side at Forest to seal his move to Tottenham, so he makes a lot of sense to pursue.

He appears to have lost his way at the Premier League club and certainly requires regular games, so if a deal can be struck, it appears to be a viable option for both Leeds United and the right-back.

Nobody can deny Luke Ayling’s dedication, but Spence would undoubtedly be considered an upgrade in terms of on-field performance.

What the club’s persistent interest in bringing in a major signing at right-back implies for Cody Drameh’s future is less obvious, and it could be argued that the club already has a ready-made second-tier option in place.

If Farke isn’t ready to rely on the 21-year-old, Spence could be a good replacement, even if it’s a needless switch.
