Liverpool is expected to appeal the decision to send Curtis Jones to the stands following Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

In the 26th minute, the midfielder was sent off when referee Simon Hooper altered his initial yellow card to a red one. Hooper reviewed the film on the pitchside monitor before ruling that Jones’ challenge on Yves Bissouma was major foul play.

Jurgen Klopp‘s bad luck with the video assistant referee continued with Luis Diaz‘s goal, which was erroneously thrown away for offside. VAR examined the goal and disallowed it, however the PGMOL afterwards issued a statement in which they admitted their mistake.

Many have criticised the use of VAR over the weekend in north London, and Liverpool is reportedly preparing to dispute Jones‘ dismissal. If they are succeed in their appeal, the 22-year-old might face an additional game suspension.

If the appeal is determined to be “frivolous,” Jones’ punishment could be increased from three to four games, preventing him from facing Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Luton Town.

Liverpool will file an appeal with the Football Association to have Jones‘ punishment overturned because the versatile midfielder did not use excessive force in his challenge.
