Liverpool had hoped to bring Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to Anfield to replace departing Jurgen Klopp this summer.

But Fabrizio Romano has now announced that he will remain with the Bundesliga club.

Following an outstanding season with Leverkusen, the Reds identified Alonso as one of their top targets in the search for a new manager.

The Germans are leading the Bundesliga by ten points over Bayern Munich.

The Merseyside club will now have to start from scratch, with the Spanish manager having no plans for the 2024/2025 season.

Italian journalist Romano has already confirmed that Alonso will continue at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, with an official announcement to follow.

The 42-year-old will stay at least another season, with a release clause set to take effect in 2025.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who were both vying for his signing, have been notified of his choice to stay put.

The former Liverpool midfielder clearly wants to continue the project he is working on at Leverkusen.

Which is understandable given that the German club is still fighting in three competitions, with the Bundesliga title up for grabs this season.

Romano later revealed that Alonso is involved in Leverkusen‘s plans for potential arrivals in the summer transfer window.

And Real Madrid, along with Liverpool and Bayern, will continue to follow their former midfielder in the future.

Liverpool still has plenty of time to find an alternative to Alonso, and the backroom staff will already have a long list of managers in case this happens.

With Klopp admitting to the Reds that he would be leaving with months still in the season. Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are still in a good position to find an ideal replacement.

According to ESPN journalist Mark Ogden, Liverpool’s preferred replacement for Alonso is Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The Italian coach has done an excellent job with the Seagulls, guiding them into Europe for the first time.

His appealing playing style is sure to appeal to Liverpool fans, and he already has some Premier League experience.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs. Hughes, who will join the club as sporting director later this year, is a ‘huge fan’ of De Zerbi and is expected to have a significant influence on who the next manager will be.
