My supporter vanished just as I was about to complete the Tottenham takeover with the club legend

Frank Warren, a boxing promoter and ardent Arsenal supporter, has revealed how, in the 1990s, he came dangerously close to purchasing Spurs, despite having always supported Arsenal of North London.

Frank Warren, a boxing promoter and longtime Arsenal supporter, claims that before Sir Alan Sugar signed a contract in 1991, he was on the verge of purchasing Tottenham Hotspur.

Warren has frequently shown his passion for the Gunners over the years, but he also previously came dangerously close to beating rivals Spurs until a major backer withdrew and changed course at the last minute, ruining the opportunity.

He described how, in the purchase, he had partnered with the late Terry Venables, a former Tottenham player and manager, and had boldly written up his bid in his old box at Highbury Stadium.

After all, Sir Alan managed to buy Tottenham in his wake. In 2000, he sold the majority of his shares to ENIC, and in 2007 he sold his remaining shares. This month, Warren is promoting Tyson Fury‘s heavyweight title unification fight; during an appearance on the Peter Crouch Podcast, he gave an explanation of what transpired.

When asked about taking over a club, he responded, “I nearly did, I nearly did with Terry Venables years ago.” “I really pulled everything together to get him connected to the Spurs. That’s what we did at the old Arsenal Stadium in my box.

“We took a seat and decided to close the transaction with Tony Berry, the director at the time, and Irving Scholar. We were quite near when the guy who was supposed to provide the funding simply vanished and moved on to work with Alan Sugar.”
