Observed: A Leeds United player required comfort following his defeat by QPR in the away end – YEP

Leeds United’s chances of earning automatic promotion were severely damaged on Friday night when they lost 4-0 against QPR, their worst performance of the season.

Despite a terrible decline in performance after the March international break, the Whites have managed to stay in the running for automatic promotion.

Leeds hasn’t won the championship since mid-March thanks to two victories, but Ipswich Town’s concurrent decline has kept Daniel Farke‘s team in the top two even though they were destroyed 4-0 on Friday.

QPR 4-0 Leeds: Disintegrating just when it matters most.
Leeds could have been three points ahead going into the last week of the season if they had capitalised on their 4-3 victory at Middlesbrough, especially now that they know that Ipswich lost points at Hull City.

But for much of Friday night’s match against Marti Cifuentes’ team, Leeds was clearly second best; by halftime, they were behind 2-0 and made hardly an effort to rally in either half.

Leicester’s promotion was confirmed with two more goals for the home team, and Farke’s tactical setup—or lack thereof—as well as the performance of a mediocre group of players were critically questioned.

At full time, Patrick Bamford is comforting Archie Grey. A half-empty away end confronting the players in front of them with awkward questions.

Archie Grey required a full-time Bamford console.
It was obviously devastating for the Leeds team to lose such a big game and to be humiliated by the lowest score of the year.

Not least of all for longstanding Leeds supporter Archie Grey, who was consoled by Patrick Bamford following the match, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post:

“At full time, Patrick Bamford consoles Archie Grey.” A half-empty away end confronting the players in front of them with awkward questions. The irony of that QPR loss is that all we need to do to advance is win against Southampton if Ipswich loses to Coventry tomorrow.

There’s every reason for both groups of supporters to be imploding, even though the Ipswich and Leeds meltdowns may be occurring on a less dramatic scale.

With our easy schedule of games coming up, both teams ought to be ahead by now if they capitalised on the mistakes of the other teams, taking one point from Blackburn and Sunderland at home.
