Despite no official confirmation, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur set-piece coach Gianni Vio will not be working with the club this season.
Gianni Vio was brought in last summer to help Antonio Conte and his team capitalise on set-piece opportunities.
Clearly, his efforts were fruitful, as Tottenham scored 16 goals from set-piece situations throughout the 2022/23 season. Only Liverpool outperformed Spurs in these scenarios.
Despite all of Spurs’ troubles last season, in which the club finished ninth in the Premier League, the output from set-pieces was a significant improvement over previous seasons.
With Conte gone and his primarily Italian coaching staff also gone, many questioned if Gianni Vio would stay. He did, however, stay with the Spurs until the conclusion of the season to work alongside Ryan Mason.
Is Gianni Vio still at Tottenham Hotspur?
Ange Postecoglou, the club’s new manager, has taken over in North London and recruited his own coaching staff. Mason, Chris Davies, Mile Jedinak, Matt Wells, and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch are all members of the unit.
However, according to Football.London, Vio will not be joining that squad for the new season. The Italian, it appears, “has not been a part” of the Postecoglou era.
Until now, the club’s official position has been that “a decision had not yet been made” on whether to retain Vio’s services.
The 70-year-old works on a “freelance basis,” and with “no sightings” of the coach around the training site or on the pre-season tour, it is commonly assumed that his stint with Spurs “has come to an end.”
If that is the truth, it is a sad to see Gianni Vio go, since he definitely had a major impact on the squad and helped us out a lot last year.
Hopefully, some of his teachings and concepts have persisted and will be put to good use this season.
