Mark Robins, manager of Coventry City, has disclosed that the club has turned down approaches for Leeds United target Gustavo Hamer this summer.
Robins delivered the update following Saturday’s pre-season success over Exeter City, implying to the Coventry Telegraph that Hamer‘s head has been changed by the rumours.
According to Phil Hay, Hamer is among a list of players Leeds are hoping to sign before the end of the transfer window, with midfield being an area in need of reinforcement.
Leeds‘ interest does not appear to have progressed since that time, though this latest update from Robins could indicate that they have been working on a deal behind the scenes.
However, Leeds will face Premier League competition in the hunt for Hamer, with Burnley apparently having had a cash + player deal rejected in July.
Robins says that bids for Leeds target Hamer have been rebuffed.
Hamer‘s contract at Coventry expires in 12 months and he has yet to sign a new one, according to Robins, who believes the attention this summer has changed his head.
“The honest answer is yes, we’ve had offers, but they haven’t been acceptable,” he added. Who knows, that could change. He’s a fantastic player, there’s no doubt about it, and other clubs crave him and put things in his head that you can’t take away from him.
“I think what I really want to see is us finish our recruitment and then see what happens, but it’s ultimately his decision.”
With this newest update, it appears unlikely that Hamer will sign a new contract, thus this summer marks their last chance to get a fee close to what he is worth.
As a result, Leeds should do everything possible to bring him in, as he may be the creative force – whether from number eight or number ten – that the Whites have urgently needed for some time.
Last season, Hamer scored 11 goals and supplied 10 assists in the Championship, and those kinds of numbers would be a great boost for Daniel Farke‘s team.
