USMNT star Matt Turner on the competition at Nottingham Forest and why he knew it was time to leave Arsenal: “It’s easy to get too comfortable.”

After joining Nottingham Forest from Arsenal this summer, Matt Turner says he is relishing the competition he will face there.

WHAT OCCURED? Turner completed a transfer to Forest this summer in order to pursue a starting position in the Premier League after leaving the Emirates.

Turner has been Forest’s starting center through the first five games of the season, with backup center Ethan Horvath a member of the United States men’s national team.

Prior to the international break, his most recent performance resulted in a victory over Chelsea and a clean sheet for him.

Odysseas Vlachodimos, a Greek international, was recently signed by Forest for £7.7 million ($9.7 million), leaving Benfica, where he had started for the previous several seasons.

Turner might be concerned about that, but he claims to be looking forward to the opposition he’ll face once the international break is over.

“I feel like I’ve adapted pretty well to the move,” Turner said.

“I’m thrilled to have had the chance to attend, participate in games, and compete. It’s simple to fall into the mindset of not competing and content with just collecting your paycheck and reporting to work, but I believe the competition aspect of the game is what first drew me in.”

“Speaking of competition, the Premier League is the best league in the world, and there will be competition for positions. If we want to be the club we want to be moving forward, we’ll need competition on and off the field every day in practice to fend off complacency and other issues. I’m excited about the challenges ahead. I’m excited to compete and, in the end, I want to play as many games as I can to maintain the competitive spirit on the field.”

Additionally, Turner discussed why he chose to leave Arsenal after serving as Aaron Ramsdale’s backup during his first and only season in London.

“I think towards the end of the season when I felt like there was games that I could have been playing that I wasn’t even really getting a sniff of them,” Turner said.

“I’m glad I had the chance to go, participate in the games, and be there. It’s simple to fall into the mindset of not competing and content with just collecting your paycheck and reporting to work, but I believe the competition aspect of the game is what first drew me in.”
