West Ham’s 5’10” starlet is an excellent Maguire replacement.

Ronnie Edwards could be  Harry Maguire’s replacement for David Moyes.

West Ham United have recently made a couple of much-needed additions in Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse, but manager David Moyes will be looking to add a few more. The transfer market closes in two weeks, and if Moyes wants to recreate his European heroics from last season, he can’t afford to rest on his laurels and must continue to invest the £105 million he received from the sale of Declan Rice. With two midfielders already on the way this summer, attention is now turning to strengthening his defense, and a young star is being scouted.Glasgow Rangers are interested in recruiting Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards, according to Football Scotland, but they are not alone.

West Ham have also expressed an interest in the teenager, and Moyes could offer both Europa League group-stage football and a chance to test himself in the Premier League. The 20-year-old has two years left on his current contract, but due to Peterborough’s inability to reach the Championship following a playoff defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last season, the club may have to sell him this summer.

How good is Ronnie Edwards?

Only a few weeks ago, it appeared that the Hammers were on the verge of completing a deal for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.A sum of roughly £30 million was agreed upon with United, and Moyes appeared to be on the verge of discussing personal terms with the Englishman, but the move has fallen through.Maguire’s departure from Manchester United thus late in the transfer season meant they would struggle to find an acceptable successor, and the Scot will have to start over.Edwards, on the other hand, could be a great replacement for the former Leicester City defender, especially given that he is ten years younger and has yet to reach his prime.Last season, the Posh centre-back played more league games than Maguire (40 to 16), and he also had more tackles (two to 0.5), interceptions (1.4 to 0.8), and clearances (3.3 to 2.6) per game.

The youngster also demonstrated his physical prowess by winning four duels per game compared to Maguire’s 2.4, while Edwards also averaged more touches (68.7 to 42.4) and completed more accurate passes (49.1 to 30.6) per game than his much more esteemed compatriot last season.Of course, one was playing in the third tier and the other at the highest level, but it’s clear that Edwards might come at a much lower cost than the United titan, while also having the potential to improve further.

The 5 foot 10 youngster was even dubbed a “Rolls-Royce” by Barry Fry in 2021, when he was just 18 years old, and his future undoubtedly belongs at a much better level than the one he is presently playing at.Perhaps the failure of the Maguire deal is a gift in disguise for Moyes, as it allows him to make a more solid approach to Peterborough for their prized asset, which would be a very wise investment indeed.
