When Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund arrived at Manchester United during the summer transfer window, it appeared as though Erik ten Hag had completed the final pieces of his Old Trafford puzzle, ready to move beyond a top-four finish. However, seven games into the season, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Red Devils are on the cusp of a crisis, having lost four of their first seven Premier League games before succumbing to Galatasaray at Old Trafford in the Champions League. Following an update from Old Trafford, analyst Frank McAvennie has weighed in on Ten Hag’s future.
According to Football Insider, the Manchester United board is still very much behind Ten Hag and believes he is the ideal guy to turn the club’s fortunes around. After a great first season at Old Trafford, he has plenty of credit in the bank, albeit the report cautions that performance must improve. When questioned whether Ten Hag should have a future at United following the update, McAvennie issued a harsh assessment, saying:
“No, not right now.” He ought to be fired. When Ronaldo went there and slammed all the players, I knew something was up; that was a terrible indictment. He did not want [Cristiano] Ronaldo because he believed he could do it his own way, and he has not gotten it right in my opinion. I don’t think he’s finished; he hasn’t delivered on his promises. He promised a lot but has yet to deliver. They’ve had excellent managers come in and they haven’t been able to change anything, so what chance does Ten Hag have?”
Despite McAvennie‘s judgement, Ten Hag remains the man for the job, according to those in power at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman trusted to turn things around.
Should Manchester United fire Ten Hag?
After a poor start to the season, Ten Hag is lucky to have earned enough of credit during his inaugural season, in which he led United to the Champions League and won the Carabao Cup. That credit, however, will not stay long, and he must turn things around before it’s too late.
Due to his developing injury problems, the manager may also be given some leeway. Ten Hag has already had to deal with the absences of Hojlund, Mount, Raphael Varane, and Lisandro Martinez, among others, this season. Most managers, including the Dutchman, are going to struggle without a number of crucial personnel.
