We now know for certain that Liverpool will not hire Xabi Alonso as their next manager.

Jürgen Klopp‘s departure will not be reversed, and Rúben Amorim of Sporting CP is the new favourite.

The transition face.

The Reds are about to embark on a period of transition. With Klopp‘s departure not the only hurdle to face.

Michael Edwards has taken on a new role with FSG, Richard Hughes has been appointed as Liverpool‘s new sporting director. And the coming summer will be critical in establishing the club’s future.

As always, Liverpool is using analytics to determine who is the best match for the manager’s post.

Amorim is one potential, while Roberto De Zerbi, who will have an Anfield audition this weekend. Is another highly regarded candidate.

Hughes sought to bring him to Bournemouth and has strong Italian connections.

There are merits for both coaches, but Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has already proposed a more wildcard name that he has heard people discuss.

It would be surprising if that person was ultimately hired, but they are certainly worth considering as the extended hunt for Klopp’s successor continues.

“There’s a guy at Benfica that I’ve heard mentioned, Roger Schmidt.” He told The Red Men TV last month.

“I believe he has connections to Red Bull schools…” I believe when people mention him. It’s almost as if his style is comparable to Klopp’s, so you think, ‘Okay, would that be a good fit and would you have to modify that much?'”

Schmidt has won prizes in four nations. He has developed a dynamic and winning football brand in Portugal with Benfica.

The Eagles won the Portuguese title in his first season in command and are doing well in his second. Trailing just Amorim and Sporting.

The two are due to play each other in the cup midweek and in the league next weekend. This will be Amorim vs Schmidt week, though it is unclear whether either will be major prospects at Anfield.
