Diogo Jota, a gifted Portuguese forward, skipped training in advance of the Reds’ match against Brighton after asking to be substituted in Portugal’s 0-1 loss to Spain in the Nations League midweek, according to Liverpool Echo. This has dealt Liverpool a big setback.

The gifted Portuguese attacker, who sustained a hamstring injury in the preseason and just recently recovered, could sustain another injury and miss this weekend’s match against Brighton.

Jurgen Klopp might decide not to risk the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player even if the club has not confirmed whether he is injured and will miss the game tomorrow.

Ruben Dias of Manchester City and Diogo Jota of Portugal celebrate a goal against the Czech Republic.

Jota has been a revelation for the Reds ever since he moved to Anfield and earned a name for himself as a starter. He soon knocked Roberto Firmino down the lineup, taking over as the primary striker.

By their own high standards, Liverpool have not had a great start to the season, and some of that may be ascribed to the absence of their star attacker, without whom it has been difficult to score goals.

Liverpool will be disappointed that the Portuguese striker appears to have injured himself once more, just when he appeared to be getting back to his best and gradually improving his match sharpness.

Against Brighton, Jurgen Klopp will probably rely on Roberto Firmino or Darwin Nunez to step up. Nunez would be a superior option even though the former has been preferred as a starter this year.

Brighton faces Liverpool at a time when the Seagulls are undergoing a transformation. Since Graham Potter departed the team to join Chelsea, the English team now has a new manager who will bring fresh perspectives.

Liverpool has not had a strong start to the season by their own high standards, and some of that may be attributed to the absence of their star forward, without whom it has been challenging to score goals.

Just as he seemed to be coming back to his best and increasingly sharpening his match sense, the Portuguese striker appears to have injured himself again, disappointing Liverpool.
