Tottenham Hotspur ‘leading the fight to sign Premier League attacker’

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly the front-runners to recruit Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White.

The 24-year-old was recruited by the East Midlands club shortly after their promotion back to the Premier League in the summer of 2022.

Although Forest has already been docked four points for their spending in the previous four transfer windows, the signing of the former England Under-21 international has proven critical.

Gibbs-White has 10 goals and 15 assists in 67 top-flight games, helping Forest stay in the division last season and putting them in a position to control their own destiny in 2023-24.

Gibbs-White has scored or assisted in six of his previous ten Premier League appearances, and Forest are one point above the relegation zone.

Spurs ‘leading race for Gibbs-White’

Although Gibbs-White is under contract with Forest until 2027, sources suggest that they will have to make a big money deal in the summer to prevent additional breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability standards.

Defender Murillo has been mooted as a potential fund-raiser, but it is more likely that Forest will produce more money by selling Gibbs-White.

According to Football Insider, Spurs are monitoring the situation and deciding whether to make a formal approach for the player.

According to the source, Spurs are leading the battle to sign Gibbs-White, with the belief that he will fit Ange Postecoglou‘s style of play.

While Newcastle United are said to be interested, Spurs are now in a stronger financial position to outbid the Magpies for his services.

Where would Gibbs-White fit in at Tottenham?

One of Gibbs-White‘s distinguishing characteristics is his ability to play in any position in the final third, even down the middle of the attack as a false nine.

Under two different managers this season, his most common position has been central-attacking, but the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player has also been utilised on each flank 11 times.

Postecoglou already has other options at his disposal, including Brennan Johnson, who was also signed from Forest last summer.

James Maddison is now Gibbs-White‘s chosen number ten, however he has struggled in the second half of the season, scoring one goal and assisting twice since February.

Timo Werner is also in Postecoglou’s plans, however it is unclear whether Spurs would finalise the permanent signing of the RB Leipzig forward.
