With “quality” £37 million FSG proof, Liverpool has already made their transfer policy on Matheus Nunes apparent.

Despite only recently moving to Wolves, Matheus Nunes has been linked with a transfer to Liverpool. The FSG’s position ought to be rather obvious by now

The next summer, Liverpool will make a move for at least one midfielder. That much is apparent. Jude Bellingham is hoped to be one of the new recruits, but that is far from a given. In any event, a larger recruitment campaign may be necessary.

Given that Jürgen Klopp has already had to deal with an injury crisis and that it very probably cost Liverpool points in the early going, FSG have legitimately questioned why they waited so long. Bellingham will undoubtedly be worth the wait if he shows up, but there is concern that Arthur’s half-hearted deadline day loan signing will not be sufficient to avert what might be euphemistically referred to as a “transition season.”

Having said that, it is not too difficult to understand the reasoning, which seemed to be shared for the majority of the summer by both Klopp and the owners. Liverpool does, in reality, still have a large number of midfielders. Even though many of them are prone to injuries, the manager would only be left without a trio that at the very least appears capable of winning most games in a very unlucky combination of circumstances.

The equation will substantially change the following year. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keta are both in the final year of their contracts with Liverpool; if they left, the center of the field would lose two players, and the average age of the midfield would spike. That would still leave Thiago and Jordan Henderson, who will both be well into their 30s, and Milner, who will be 37 by then.

As a result, even though FSG have been mostly shown to be incorrect, there should at least be some understanding for their stance that they would not spend a lot of money on an unsatisfactory fit while the current midfield appeared to still be viable for another year. Aurélien Tchouaméni was pursued, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that they would have pursued another player if he had been available.

In a roundabout way, this leads us to Matheus Nunes. Liverpool reportedly have interest in the Portugal international, despite the fact that he only recently joined Wolves, according to a report from Brazilian site UOL. It specifically asserts that if Bellingham proves to be unreachable, he might be a viable option.
